Shenanigans: the problem of traditionally gendered acts of chivalry
Benevolent sexism [aka chivalry] may not be physically violent, but it has a pretty similar outcome to hostile sexism… . . A group of psychologists … ran a study to find out does benevolent sexism influence how girls’ feel about their bodies?
[snip]I have ALWAYS been weird about guys doing stuff for me. Even if they insist on doing things like opening the door for me or grabbing the check to the point where I just give up, I ALWAYS go way out of my way to return the act. If you open the door for me, you’re damn right I’ll open the next door for you. If you insist on getting the check, I’ll make sure I pick the next one up. And when it comes to lifting things, I’ll almost never allow a guy to pick it up for me. Guys strangely get tickled about the way I act about these things. I remember once this guy went out of his way to open the car door for me, so I walked around the car and opened his door for him.
edit: for some reason this post didn’t post the whole thing so either click the title or go here http://www.sparksummit.com/2012/02/06/research-blog-%E2%80%9Cill-get-that-for-you%E2%80%9D-chivalry-is-alive-and-holding-your-boxes/
